      The Outer Cape

The quiet, natural Outer Cape offers a very different experience from the rest of Cape Cod. Fortunately, the Natural Seashore was established in 1960 saving the miles of sandy beaches, quiet marshes, and natural harbors of the Lower Cape from the types of development that occurred elsewhere. There are no high rises or amusement parks.

While Eastham is quiet, Yarmouth and Hyannis, a short drive away, are anything but quiet! They offer outlet malls, theaters, nightclubs, fine restaurants, ice cream shops, mini golf, arcades, golf courses, flea markets, harbor cruises, whale watches, and fast ferries to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.

However, every town on the Cape offers a unique experience from historic, quaint Sandwich to eclectic, dynamic Provincetown, you will find it all on Cape Cod. Visitors enjoy strolling along pristine, sandy beaches, swimming in the warm waters of Cape rivers, ponds, Cape Cod Bay or the Atlantic Ocean. They can also tour historic homes, shop in quaint shops and outlet malls, eat in ice cream shops and fine restaurants, bike along the Cape Cod Rail Trail, hike along trails maintained by the National Seashore or Audubon Society, or simply people watch.

The Lower Cape also  provides an active night life. Some tourists enjoy professional performances at the Melody Tent in Hyannis,  a less traditional performance in Provincetown, or a free Orleans' Firebirds' game in Eldridge Field. Others enjoy night clubs in Barnstable, watching movies at a Fifties retro drive-in theater in Welfleet, or a performance at one of the many local theater companies such as Cape Cod’s oldest theater group at the Cape Cod Playhouse in Dennis.
